The Brotherhood of the Time Travelling Jeans (Genes)

I picked up Ruby Red on a whim. At first, I must admit, I had purely judged it by it’s cover. For a teen book, it looked mediocre. Then a co-worker mentioned it involved time travelling genes and I was intrigued. A teen book about something interesting? How could it be, after all?

In any case, Ruby Red was written by Kerstin Gier in 2009 and parts two and three were released in 2010 (German and other languages that are NOT English only). Of course, now that I’v read this official translated version and get what all the hype’s about, I’m desperate for more.

This isn’t a typical love story between two time travelling agents flung into incomprehensible circumstances. It’s about a girl, like me, who likes her life and watching television, reading, chatting with her best friend. It’s about how she get’s caught up in the secrets of her family and betrayal and even in the revelations of the philosopher’s stone (immortality). 

It almost touches on familiar topics from the Harry Potter series, but then there’s all that time-turner-less time travelling that is so very fascinating, almost like a disease (see The Time Traveller’s Wife). What I love so much is that despite the main character’s, Gwen’s, flaws and childishness, she’s so lovable. She’s even funny and regards her “special” label and ability a little freaky-weird. 

It’s a time travelling conspiracy story that I just can’t help but engulf, without much chewing. Frankly, I’ve been thinking about manually translating the original German books so that I can finish this trilogy.

This book is highly recommended for those bored with regular teen books and want something easy and funny to read, with a little bit of sci-fi.

Definitely an original, 4 out of 5 plums.
